ICL-IP Terneuzen zet zich actief in voor een duurzamere bedrijfsvoering op weg naar een circulaire economie
ICL-IP Terneuzen is a production location of ICL, a global producer of specialty chemicals. The site in Terneuzen is a part of the Industrial Products business unit, and its main activity is the processing of bromine for several industrial applications.
The bromine based products from Terneuzen can be found in numerous products, such as flame retardants (in furniture, electronic devices or cars), antiseptics (in cooling water or swimming pools) but even in medicines or sunscreen lotion. An important new application for bromine is energy storage (especially energy from natural resources) in bromine based batteries, a promising new technology that was rewarded with a nomination for the Dutch Responsible Care Award in 2016.
ICL-IP Terneuzen is actively contributing to a more sustainable conduct of business, towards a circular economy. This is one of the main reasons that this site is a part of Smart Delta Resources (SDR). The production site is also involved in several recycling projects to ensure that residual products – even of its customers – can be re-used as a valuable source again.

Fulfilling essential human needs in our core markets
The agricultural products produced by ICL help feed the world’s growing population. The potash, phosphates and polysulphate that it mines and manufactures are used as ingredients in fertilizers that help farmers increase the quantity and quality of their crops. Substances such as phosphate and magnesium also serve as essential components in the pharmaceutical industry. ICL’s Food Specialties enable people to have greater access to more varied and higher quality food. ICL’s Engineered Materials based on bromine and phosphates prevent the spread of forest fires and allow the safe and widespread use of a variety of products and materials.
ICL produces approximately a third of the world’s bromine, and is the sixth largest potash producer, as well as the leading provider of pure phosphoric acid. It is a major manufacturer of specialty fertilizers, specialty phosphates and flame retardants. ICL benefits from a broad presence throughout the world in over 30 countries, across five continents with proximity to large markets, including emerging regions. ICL employs around 13.000 people globally.
ICL has another production location in the region. In Grobbendonk, Belgium, around 30 kilometers away from Antwerp, you will find a production site that belongs to the business unit Specialty Fertilizers. Here, fertilizers are being processed into advanced products that are soluble in water. The products from this factory are being applied by clients all over the world, mainly by utilizing drip irrigation. By doing so, the fertilizer can be added very precisely. These water soluble fertilizers are mostly being used in the Ornamental Horticulture, Turf & Amenity and Specialty Agriculture sectors. This production facility in Grobbendonk is one of the most modern and best equipped liquid fertilizer factories in the world.

ICL-IP will use hydrogen from Dow, together with Yara. Hydrogen is a residual product for Dow but a valuable source for ICL. The hydrogen is to be transported by using an existing gas pipe, which has been out of use for several years.
