On October 24, 2025, the Flemish government officially designated Fluxys c-grid as the operator of the future CO₂ transport network in Flanders. This decision is part of the decree on the transport of carbon dioxide via pipelines and represents an important step in the development of a low-carbon industry.

With this recognition as a Carbon Network Operator (CNO), Fluxys c-grid has been tasked with developing and managing the CO₂ network in Flanders. Earlier this year, the company was already appointed as CNO for Wallonia. Together, these appointments form a solid basis for a Belgian and cross-border CO₂ network connecting industries with storage sites in the North Sea.

Transporting CO₂: crucial for the climate and industry

Fluxys c-grid is a subsidiary of Fluxys Belgium, founded in 2023 together with partners Socofe, Pipelink, and SFPIM. The company builds on decades of experience in gas transport and is now applying that expertise to CO₂ transport. Since 2021, Fluxys c-grid has been working with industry partners, governments, and neighboring countries to prepare an open pipeline network that can transport CO₂ emissions from companies for reuse or permanent storage.

The Flemish appointment means that Fluxys c-grid can now also start rolling out infrastructure and services in our region that help companies reduce their CO₂ emissions. The focus will be on affordable rates and support mechanisms to make investments feasible.

Belgium as a hub for CO₂ transit

With recognition in both Flanders and Wallonia, Fluxys c-grid has the opportunity to develop a robust, cross-border CO₂ network. This network will connect industrial clusters in Belgium with storage locations in the North Sea and with neighboring countries such as Germany and the Netherlands. This will position Belgium as a key player in the European climate transition.

Smart Delta Resources Flanders, of which Fluxys is a member, is closely monitoring these developments. In our region within North Sea Port, our industrial cluster also has ambitions to capture and transport CO₂ on a large scale. The recognition of Fluxys c-grid as a network operator is therefore an important milestone for Flanders and for the wider SDR region.
