For the first time, the Flemish and Walloon governments are joining forces with leading industrial companies to accelerate the roll-out of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Belgium. On 7 November, a joint declaration was signed at the Holcim site in Obourg (Mons), paving the way for investments in CO₂ infrastructure. This positions Belgium as a crucial hub for decarbonisation in North-Western Europe.

Industry and government join forces for CO₂ infrastructure in Belgium

The declaration was signed by the Prime Ministers of Flanders and Wallonia, together with the CEOs of 17 industrial companies and employer organisations Voka and AKT. These companies account for the majority of Belgium's industrial CO₂ emissions, which are often difficult to avoid with solutions such as energy efficiency, electrification or switching to cleaner energy sources.

For sectors such as steel, cement and chemicals, there will always be residual emissions. That is why carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a necessary addition to achieving climate targets while maintaining industrial competitiveness.

Fluxys c-grid in a central role

During the event, Fluxys c-grid, recognised as a CO₂ network operator in Wallonia since July and in Flanders since October, emphasised the importance of an open pipeline network that bundles CO₂ volumes and transports them efficiently. This infrastructure forms the backbone of a future CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage) system in Belgium and beyond.

What does this mean for Smart Delta Resources?

This joint declaration is more than a symbolic step: it creates the conditions for large-scale CO₂ capture and transport in Belgium. For our international industrial cluster, this opens up prospects for realising projects more quickly and connecting to a future cross-border network.

Among the 17 companies supporting this ambition are several partners of Smart Delta Resources, including Fluxys, North Sea Port, Air Liquide, ArcelorMittal Belgium and ENGIE. Their involvement emphasises how national CCS initiatives and our regional climate ambitions go hand in hand.

New tool ‘Map-it CCU’ assists organisations in selecting suitable carbon capture technology

30 September, 2025

Companies and institutions are increasingly focusing on CO₂ capture in order to achieve our climate targets. However, it is very difficult for a company to assess which technology is the most effective and cost-efficient. By entering a few technical details – such as the concentration, temperature and pressure of the CO₂ stream – Map-it CCU displays an overview of all available technologies, ranked according to suitability.
